Zaros is known from the antiquity for the water spring which still provides fresh water. The trip from Heraklion to the Lake of Zaros takes about an hour and a half. The same goes for the return. The forest of Rouvas, in the gorge of Saint Nicholas, is an important ecosystem of holly trees of national interest.
The hiking path starts from the lake of Zaros and it is part of the E4 trail. We follow the path in the gorge of Agios Nikolaos, where we walk along the river bed, which has a lot of water on spring and several waterfalls and ponds are formed. After 2 hours (almost 5 km) we will find ourselves at the enchanting holly forest of Rouvas. At Ai Giannis, we will find a landscaped picnic area. There is a mountain shelter, toilets, benches and a spring where we can enjoy a brief snack.
At this point we will have to decide if we will continue to the location “Dyo Prini”, where we can admire the view to the forest of Rouvas, Zaros and Messara plane, or if we will return to the lake.

Ida, the highest mountain on Crete, and finally, Mt. Dikti. This will be a great way to experience the diversity of the island, its stunning views, and its rich culture and history. Furthermore, it will be an excellent opportunity to test your physical and mental endurance, as well as to build your confidence in climbing mountains.
Mount Karfi is located at Lassithi plateau, about 70km west of Heraklion. Lassithi is known for the picturesque windmills. In the 1950s and 1960s the plateau was one of Europe’s first wind farms. There were about 10-13 thousand windmills that pumped the underground water, with which the local farmers were watering their crops. Moreover, the area is known as the birth place of Zeus, the King of the gods, according to the Greek mythology.
The Sarakina gorge is located at the southeast Crete, 17 km from Ierapetra, near the small village of Mithi. It is not long but according to the visitors it is the easiest and nicest.
According to the myth, the giant Sarantapichos, stopped once to drink water from the river Myrtos, and his long beard, slashed the mountain in two, and the gorge was formed.
