Cross one of the most impressive, in terms of natural beauty gorges of Crete. Walk through dense vegetation, relax under the shade of the trees and swim in the natural waterfall that adorns the area.
The gorge of Richtis is located between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia on the north side of the Prefecture of Lassithi. The path that crosses it, starts northeast from the village of “Exo Mouliana” and ends at the beach of Richtis. The gorge has enough water all year round.
Our route starts from the parking lot on the side of the main road. Following a cement road to the stone arched bridge of Lachanas where the paved road ends, a beautiful path begins. The trail follows the river and the verdant landscape. Plane trees, oleander and sage are countless, and the fragrancies of the aromatic plants are constantly present.
Along the way, we will also meet old, abandoned watermills, and then head towards the highlight of our excursion. The beautiful, 20-meter-high waterfall of Richtis, forms a pond at its base and gives its name to the entire gorge. At this point, we will rest and cool off by swimming in the cool water of the waterfall. Once we have rested, we will return to the starting point of our excursion by following the same route.

It has the highest topographic prominence in Greece. The wider area of Psiloritis is a Natural park founded in 2001, and a UNESCO Global Geopark. On its slopes lies the Idaean Cave (Greek: Ιδαίον Άντρο), in which, according to legend, Zeus, the king of the gods, was born.
Mount Karfi is located at Lassithi plateau, about 70km west of Heraklion. Lassithi is known for the picturesque windmills. In the 1950s and 1960s the plateau was one of Europe’s first wind farms. There were about 10-13 thousand windmills that pumped the underground water, with which the local farmers were watering their crops. Moreover, the area is known as the birth place of Zeus, the King of the gods, according to the Greek mythology.
The Sarakina gorge is located at the southeast Crete, 17 km from Ierapetra, near the small village of Mithi. It is not long but according to the visitors it is the easiest and nicest.
