About Crete

Crete (Greek: Κρήτη) is the largest of the Greek islands and one of the largest in the Mediterranean.

With a total area of 8,336 km², it has a length of about 260 kilometers and a width ranging from 60 to 12 kilometers.

Its coastline, which presents great variety, stretches for approximately 1,065 kilometers.

The island has a population of around 640,000 inhabitants and is divided into four regional units: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lasithi.

Crete is renowned for its rich history, as it was the cradle of the Minoan civilization, one of the oldest and most advanced civilizations in Europe. The palaces of Knossos, Phaistos, Malia, and Zakros bear witness to the grandeur of the Minoan era.

The island boasts unique natural landscapes, such as the Samaria Gorge, the Lasithi Plateau, the Balos Lagoon, and the palm forest of Vai. Its coastline features breathtaking beaches, including Elafonisi, Balos, Falassarna, and Matala.
