Omalos is a wonderful place worth visiting, combined with trips to the nearby mountains, gorges, and picturesque villages. Here you will experience the wild beauty of authentic Crete, away from any human urban activity.
Our trip begins with a scenic drive through unique Cretan landscapes, heading towards the historic village of Viannos. There, we make a short stop to enjoy a traditional Greek coffee in the village square, soaking in the local atmosphere and hospitality.
Next, we visit the Memorial of the Fallen in Amiras, a deeply moving site that commemorates the tragic massacre of civilians during the Nazi occupation of Crete in World War II. This stop adds a historical and emotional depth to our journey, reminding us of the island’s resilience and courage.
Afterwards, we continue our tour towards the Omalos plateau in the province of Viannos. Nestled at the southern foot of the second-highest peak of Mount Dikti, Afendis Christos (2141m), and located 60km southeast of Heraklion, the plateau is accessible via the forest road from Kato Simi.
You will be immersed in a truly authentic Cretan shepherd experience. Not only will you taste their delicious handmade cheeses, fresh local products, and traditional meals cooked before your eyes — but you’ll also become part of their daily routine.
