Omalos is a wonderful place worth visiting, combined with trips to the nearby mountains, gorges, and picturesque villages. Here you will experience the wild beauty of authentic Crete, away from any human urban activity.
Our trip starts with visiting Viannos village passing through unique landscapes. Picturesque fishing villages with unique landscapes. After our tour, we are going to Omalos plateau in the province Viannos. It is located at the southern foot of the second- highest peak of Mount Dikti, Afendis Christos (2141m), 60km southeast of the city of Heraklion. It can be accessed through the forest road starting from Kato Simi. Our hosts; lucky visitors will meet the Stavrakakis brothers, local herders on the plateau of Omalos. They built their facilities themselves with the rocks that the area provide and inherited the land from their grandparents, that used to be guerillas on the mountains been located above the, during the Nazi occupation of the island.
You will try some of their local delicious cheese and other products and delicious meals been prepared and cooked just before your eyes! You will also experience local wine of their production and of course, Raki!
Be part of their daily routine; If you are interested, you can also have an active role by helping them to their daily routine, such as milk production or cheese making or witness the above as a spectator!
