Mesonas Gorge – Trekking

Discover abandoned villages, long lost ancient settlements, and the oldest known Olive Tree in the world, while trekking along one of the most picturesque and geologically interesting gorges of the Island.
We set off from Kavoussi village (36 km from Elounda), which is 100 meters above sea level. We then follow an ancient uphill trail that runs along the eastern side of Mesonas gorge.
Mesonas gorge, is a scenic gorge that connects the village of Thripti to the Kavousi area. Walking along the trail, allows us to see an old, abandoned village and admire the unique and beautiful geological features within the gorge. Later, we visit the ancient Minoan settlement of Azoria, where we have a short stop for a few pictures.
Shortly after, we continue upwards following an old aqueduct that leads us to the Plateau of Thripti at 950m. This is the highest point of our hike from which we can appreciate the panoramic view of both the Northern and the Southern coasts of the island. We then hike back to Kavoussi village via an old stone-covered trail, passing by the oldest known Olive Tree in the world (3,250-years-old), where our excursion reaches its end.
We could also take a shorter loop and stop at the historic Olive Tree and ancient settlement of Azoria. Then, taking a dirt road, we can make our way back to the village. Families may use this option.

Gorge De Sarakina
€120.00La gorge de Sarakina est située au sud-est de la Crète, à 17 km de Iérapétra, à proximité du petit village de Mithi. Cette gorge n’est pas longue. Selon les visiteurs, c’est la plus facile et la plus agréable.
Selon le mythe, le géant Sarantapichos s’y est arrêté une fois pour boire de l’eau de la rivière Myrtos. Sa longue barbe a coupé la montagne en deux et la gorge a été formée.Canyon Tsoutsouros
